British Strawberry Season

Although the English weather is unpredictable we can at least rely on the quality of British strawberries! The natural strawberry season is short, from early June to mid August, although this is often prolonged with the  use of plastic polytunnels. The British climate is ideally suited to growing soft fruits and when you buy British you can guarantee a fresher fruit. Imported strawberries are picked under-ripe so that they survive transportation without spoiling, however, strawberries do not ripen once they have been picked so these will often be harder and with less flavour.

As well as tasting great, strawberries are very healthy, packed full of anti-ageing antioxidants and nutrients that help improve circulation to the skin. They contain the slowest releasing natural sugars, so after eating strawberries you will be less tempted to snack. Strawberries are also a high source of folic acid and vitamin C, giving a powerful boost to your immune system and helping fight infection. In fact just five strawberries contains more antioxidant power than three apples or four bananas, and more vitamin C than an entire orange! (Source: British Summer Fruits)

Did you know…the strawberry plant is a member of the rose family and strictly speaking it is the tiny seeds on the surface of the strawberry that is the real fruit of the plant?
