English Asparagus

Asparagus, one of the most nutritionally well balanced vegetables in existence with diuretic properties and more folic acid than any other, has been used as a culinary vegetable from very early times. It even features in the worlds oldest surviving cook book dating back to the 3rd century AD. Asparagus has been growing in England since the sixteenth century and it is considered the finest in the world with an unbeatable delicate flavour and sweet taste. The asparagus season is very short, running from late April to mid June but it pays to buy English, not only for its superb flavour, but to ensure optimum freshness. Try serving with tarragon, cheese, chervil, lemon, salmon and sea trout, or try dipping into a boiled egg instead of toasted soldiers. Another idea is to brush the spears with olive oil, BBQ till lightly singed, then drizzle with lemon juice and enjoy.
