Joshua's becomes a Food Miles Hero
In 2006 it was 12 years since the launch of the first Food Miles Report, highlighting the consequences of the distance that our food travels from ‘plough to plate’. Food travels further partly because of the centralised supermarket systems that have taken over from local markets, but also because of our expectation of such a continuously wide choice of food throughout the year. The food industry transports ingredients from factory to factory for processing and follows cheap labour around the world. Unbelievably, this recently meant some British caught fish being processed in China and sent back to the UK to be sold! It is not uncommon for milk or potatoes to be transported many miles from the farm to a central depot for packing and then sent back to be sold in the village down the road from where they were first produced. In 2006 Joshua’s was named as a Food Miles Hero. We buy local produce whenever possible and have a strict ethical policy about products we buy from elsewhere. We also promote the benefits of buying seasonal foods which creates more variety in our diets and means we consume foods whilst they are prime condition.
Don't forget when you are shopping on our online store that any products marked with the local sign have either been produced in Devon or within an hours drive from our store in Ottery St Mary, Devon.
