Why Buy Organic?

What does organic mean?

OrganicItems in our store showing the organic symbol displayed to the left have either been certified as organic by the Soil Association, or have been made using organically farmed products. Organic farming avoids using agrichemicals, meaning the use of artificial chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides is severely restricted. Instead organic farmers rely on crop rotations as a natural method of fertilising the soil. Organic meat comes from animals that have been reared without the use of the drugs, antibiotics, or wormers that are commonly used in other livestock farming. No organic products contain any GMOs (genetically modified organisms). The aim is to enhance the health of the local ecosystems, as well as the health of the consumer.

How does it benefit the environment?

Organic farming is friendly to the environment as it is concerned with sustaining diverse ecosystems. It also uses less energy and produces less waste than other forms of farming. No synthetic pesticides, which can be harmful to wildlife, are released into the environment during the process.

How does it benefit your health?

Organic food is grown with nature, and is therefore full of vitamins and minerals. In fact, organic items contain more vitamins and benefiting minerals than any other type of food. As organic farming does not rely on chemicals, you will find no chemical leftovers on your food. Out of the 290 food additives that are approved for use across the EU, only 32 are permitted in organic farming. This means far fewer additives will be in your food and in your body. Food additives linked to asthma and heart disease are among those banned under organic standards. In addition to all of this, we believe organic food tastes better!

Alcoholic drinksOrganic Wine

Organic wines are produced using grapes grown in organically managed vineyards, ensuring chemical intervention is kept to a minimum. Organic Vineyards often contain cover crops between their vines and work to attract beneficial insects to feed harmful pests. It is rare to get sulphur free wines and many organic vineyards still use sulphites to stabilise vines, protect the delicate grapes from fungal infection, and help prevent deterioration in the taste of the wine; however sulphur tends to be used in organic farming at a much lower level. It is believed that these lower sulphur levels are what reduce the chance of a hang over. Follow this link for Joshua's range of organic wines.
